PARSIPPANY, N.J. – March 21, 2025 – Today, Zoetis announced the Vanguard® B Intranasal vaccine is now available in a 0.5 mL dose for protection against Bordetella bronchiseptica, also known as kennel cough. Approved by the USDA on August 31, 2024, the new formulation is a smaller dose size and single nostril administration to ensure a more comfortable and convenient experience for puppies as young as three weeks old.
“Protecting our pets’ health starts with preventative care, and vaccination is an effective way to safeguard your dog from a preventable illness like kennel cough,” said Tara Bidgood, DVM, PhD, DACVCP, Vice President, Head of Veterinary Professional Services and Medical Affairs, Independent Petcare at Zoetis. “We are pleased to offer this new formulation of our trusted Vanguard® B Intranasal vaccine to provide early protection for dogs as young as three weeks old. Zoetis remains committed to advancing animal health through innovation, and the availability of the smaller 0.5 mL dose vaccine reflects our dedication to providing early, effective, science-backed solutions that benefit both pets and their owners.”
Kennel cough is a highly contagious respiratory disease that spreads year-round, particularly in environments where dogs are in close contact with one another. Dogs of all ages – especially those who frequent parks, go to the groomer, or stay at boarding facilities – are at risk of contracting kennel cough. Common signs and symptoms include a frequent, honking cough, sneezing, irritated eyes, and a runny nose. Most dogs infected with kennel cough are contagious before they start showing symptoms, leading to outbreaks as the disease spreads quickly.[i]

About Bordetella bronchiseptica
Bordetella bronchiseptica is a highly contagious respiratory disease in dogs that spreads year-round, particularly in environments where dogs are in close contact or through shared water bowls or toys. Symptoms can include a runny nose, sneezing, chest inflammation and a resulting loud, deep cough. In severe cases, Bordetella can lead to pneumonia, hospitalization and sometimes death in dogs at risk.
The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) recommends annual intranasal vaccination for optimal protection against Bordetella bronchiseptica.[ii] Keeping your dog’s vaccination status current helps to reduce the chance of your dog becoming ill and lower the risk of your dog developing severe disease or spreading infection to other dogs.[iii]
